What Makes the Bed Move? (continued) ...

technology developed by Vanmark and built into our brushes and Sinewave™ segment rolls (see photo) .  (More about Sinewave™ segments in another issue).  The "rake" and "cant" of the bristles promotes the elliptical circulation path which in turn, significantly improves the efficiency of the peeler.

A common operator mistake is to try to get more bed "tumbling action" by increasing roll speed.  While proper adjustment ofprodz_tumbling.jpg (85139 bytes) roll speed is necessary, using a speed which is too high can actually be counter productive.  To help operators visualize proper bed depth and tumbling, we have prepared an illustration.  Click the thumbnail image to see full size view.

You might be wondering what happens in the case of straight abrasive rolls which have neither a special shape like the Sinewave™ segments nor the rake and cant of a Vanmark brush.  First, while it is not uncommon that a peeler is set up using only straight abrasive rolls, for many applications one of the following options is used: a combination of brush and abrasive rolls, or Sinewave™ segment abrasive rolls and straight abrasive rolls.  Another option is to add a tumbling unit (see photo), often used for elongated product, such as carrots.  A less commonly used option is to add what is known as a "lift" roll (see photo) in combination with other abrasive rolls to help create the additional tumbling action.

Your Vanmark representative would be pleased to help you with your peeler / washer setup and answer your questions. Over the years, roll combinations which work best for specific applications have been developed.  Call or email your Vanmark representative or contact one of our application specialists directly at 800-523-6261 or sales@vanmarkequipment.com.
