Use Sinewave Segments to Improve Yield (continued) ...
Sinewave segments were a natural extension of the peeler design concepts
which made the original Vanmark “Veg-A-Peel” peelers so successful. As
the rapidly expanding snack food industry demanded greater capacities and
set new standards for peeler performance, Vanmark engineers advanced the
technology to meet the needs of the industry. Among the many improvements
was the development of the sinewave abrasive segment to replace the
abrasive elements used in earlier designs.
In use, several segments are placed end-to-end on a shaft to make up the
peeler roll. Rolls are made up of either all right-hand or all left-hand
configurations to create directional tumbling action.
The complex geometry of the sinewave segments sets up an ideal tumbling
motion in the bed of the peeler. The unique shape of the segments not only
helps tumble the product, but also moves the mass of product being
contacted either toward (left hand) or away from (right hand) the
discharge. This causes product to take what can best be described as an
elliptical path as it tumbles in the bed and makes its way toward the
discharge gate.
Sinewave segment rolls are very effective for peeling, washing, or
finishing oblong shaped product, especially potatoes. It is for this
reason that many of our customers have standardized the use of sinewave
segment rolls in their peelers. However, sinewave rolls are not suited to
use with carrots or similarly shaped products.
Q: How many sinewave segment rolls do I need in my peeler?
A: Peelers may be set up with all sinewave segment rolls, but more often two or more are used in combination with brush rolls.
Q: When used in combination with other types of rolls, where should the sinewave segment rolls be placed relative to the others?
A: The choice of roll arrangements is a very important question which can dramatically affect process results and efficiency. In general, two left hand sinewave rolls will produce effective tumbling action when placed in the # 3 and # 5 positions. However, our representatives and/or factory specialists would be very pleased to help you make the best choice for your operation. They will take into account the type and condition of product entering the unit, product size, desired finish, etc. There are roll arrangements which have likely been proven best suited to your application.
Q: Do I need to modify my Vanmark peeler in any way if I want to use sinewave segments?
A: In most cases it should not be necessary to modify the peeler to use these rolls. However, sinewave segments cannot be used in Model 2500 series machines. Also, there are some restrictions to roll placement if they are used in a multi-motor hydraulically driven peeler/washer. If you have questions, we always encourage customers to consult their representative or Vanmark.
Q: Since the roll is made up of segments, can I change out a single segment or must I replace the entire roll at one time?
A: A good question. Yes, you can change one segment at a time. In fact, this is standard practice in some customers’ plants. Because it can sometimes be difficult to slide segments on the shaft, Vanmark is developing a special tool to assist in the process. Please contact the factory if interested in further information.
Q: Can sinewave segments be reconditioned when they wear out or lose their effectiveness?
A: Yes. This can be a good cost saver. Vanmark routinely reconditions segments and find they can often be reconditioned 2 to 3 times before needing to be replaced. We inspect every segment for damage and wear before reconditioning and advise the customer of any that fail to meet inspection standards. Our parts specialist, Steve Conner <mail to:>, can answer any questions you might have about reconditioning.
Q: Can I get sinewave segments in different abrasive grades?
A: Yes. Segments are available in several abrasive grades to suit your application.
Q: How can I get more information about sinewave segments and their application?
A: We are always glad to provide assistance with any application question. Contact your Vanmark representative or call Vanmark directly at 800-523-6261 and ask for Steve or Jason.
